I freed myself from religious enslavement when I was around 14.
Obviously I celebrate no religious holidays, but I do love some traditions I that are part of my ethnic background..
Case in point, the baranek wielkanocny, or butter lamb for Easter Sunday.
So you’d make or buy a lamb made of butter with peppercorn eyes. (Peppercorn eyes are a must for me.)
You’d put it in a basket along with a bunch of your pysanka (decorated easter eggs), bread, kiełbasa, etc. and on the Saturday before Easter you’d go to the church and there would be Święconka, which is this easter blessing of the food.
All nonsense of course, but Święconka marked time on the calendar like so many other holidays did back then for me.
Anyway, I should make a butter lamb. Or perhaps a butter dachshund with peppercorn eyes.
