I have been an Animalympics stan since I was 11. I replayed endlessly on Showtime in 1981 and I must have watched it 150 times that summer.
It is great animated comedy/spoof with a soundtrack and incidental music by the Yardbirds’ Graham Gouldman that is a billion times better than it has any right to be. The music often has a very 70s and early 80s sound to it with some really truly amazing songs.
My best loved tracks/songs are Z.O.O., Love’s Not For Me (Rene’s Song), With You I Can Run Forever, and Away From It All.
The film was directed by Steven Lisberger of “Tron” fame, had art direction and animation by Roger Allers who would go on to Disney and eventually direct the “The Lion King” and animation by the great Brad Bird who would eventually go on to give us the amazing “Iron Giant” as well as “The Incredibles” and “Ratatouille” amongst others.
And on top of that, we it had voice acting by the late great Gilda Radner, Billy Crystal, Harry Shearer, and Michael Fremer.
Animalympics is a mostly forgotten animated film these days but my love for it has never left me.
