A series that I had zero exposure to and never picked up was Mike Grell’s The Warlord at DC.
I was a superhero kid, and oddly, the Swords and Sorcery fantasy type stuff never held my interest. (I didn’t read the 80’s Amethyst, Princess of Gemworld series either. Though I did like the Esteban Maroto illustrated 1987 post-Crisis mini.)
Warlord would pop up in other series from time to time, and so I was aware of the character.
Grell’s artwork is pretty great here even when inked by someone else (Vince Colleta). It has always given me a Neal Adams vibe.

He was definitely far more inventive and creative in his panel layouts and overall composition compared to many books released at the same time.
I think I’ll dive into reading this finally 40+ years later.

Added it to the reading list!
