It has been a very rough week here.
My Dewey… my little Dewczek…started going downhill Sunday and by Monday was non-stop vomiting and diarrhea. He became lethargic and we thought perhaps the end was in fact at hand.
He hadn’t improved by Tuesday and we got him to the vet and I thought we were going to have to say goodbye.
However, the sudden onset was troubling and I decided to have the full blood work and X-rays and all.
We have always been fighting to keep him from eating crap outside, but clearly he did and developed a massive GI infection with some kind of bacteria that is atypical.
We decided to go through a full routine of antibiotics, anti-naseau, and anti-diarhreals.
The blood work came back with pancreatitis, possibly triggered by the infection, but obviously all working against him.
Yesterday he finally started improving a bit.
Today he actually started walking a bit, though he always struggles because of the neuropathy in his hips and legs.
He started eating again and has energy back.
This morning, for the first time since Sunday, he walked on his own from the kitchen to the living room to lay on his blanket where I snapped this photo.
We know his time is short. He’s far older than I believed him to be and he has been slowly declining and going downhill the past year.
But I felt like it just wasn’t time yet and if he could make it through this with meds, he’d have a few more weeks or months.
We are not under any illusions.
But he’s been doing much better and I hope he improves more as the meds have time to work.
